Restrictions on A Q Khan relaxed: Pak

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Pakistan authorities have reportedly eased restrictions disgraced nuclear scientist on A Q Khan.

Khan -- the father of Pakistan's nuclear bomb -- has been allowed to meet friends and relatives at his home or elsewhere in Pakistan for some months now.

''Dr Khan meets his friends and talks to people,'' Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam told a press briefing in Islamabad against the backdrop of reports that restrictions laid upon the scientist have been lifted.

However, local media quoted Khan and his family members as denying lifting of sanctions and said they wish this would have been true.

According to Khan's family members, he is only allowed to see his five old friends but restrictions have not been lifted.

He was pardoned by Pakistan President, General Pervez Musharraf, but was placed under under house arrest three years ago after he confessed to leaking nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya.

Khan -- who suffers from cancer -- reportedly told a news agency that he was recovering. The US says his proliferation network is no longer active.

Pakistan came under tremendous international pressure four years ago after a revelation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that its top scientist Dr Khan proliferated nuclear technology to Iran, Libya and North Korea.

The government, which took punitive action against Khan, however, refused to hand him over to a foreign country for investigations keeping in view ''sensitivities'' around him. He has been under house arrest at Islamabad's sprawling residence since 2004.
