Chennai: Ponni and Oscar were always there wherever they smelt a rat. But after around 10 years of service as police dogs, it's now time for them to sit back and relax.
Thanks to the Tamil Nadu government, they can now do that right here, where they grew up.
The state government has announced a pension scheme for retired police dogs. This means Ponni and Oscar will continue getting their daily rations, the cost of which is about Rs 44 per day and will also be looked after by their own trainers.
“Earlier our system was that old dogs were auctioned away to pet lovers or people with farms. But there were petitions and letters against it. So, the govt decided to do this,” Letika Saran

Ponni, a doberman tracker, has helped sleuths solve around 500 cases. And the Labrador sniffer Oscar has been involved in more than 5,000 cases.
These two canines are the first police dogs in the country to retire in style.
