The simplicity of its plot, and the earnestness behind its intention is easily the best thing about Nanhe Jaisalmer, a film about a ten -year-old boy who earns a living giving vacationers a guided tour of the desert city on his trusted camel.
Affectionately christened Nanhe Jaisalmer, this little one’s fixated upon Bollywood star Bobby Deol to whom he’s dedicated a shrine in his room, and whose every film he faithfully catches at the local makeshift cinema.
When the star comes to Jaisalmer for a film shoot, it becomes an opportunity for his little fan to learn some important lessons of life.
Up until this point, Nanhe Jaisalmer, despite being so loosely directed, still has an innocence to it that can’t be argued with. But it’s the twist in the tale, and that unnecessarily stretched-out climax that fails it eventually, because it’s so contrived.
Nanhe Jaisalmer rests squarely on the shoulders of pint-sized child actor Dwij Yadav, who delivers an endearing, uninhibited performance that uplifts this average film considerably.
The script has many holes, but at its very core, it’s a well-meaning film with its heart in the right place. I can’t think of too many Hindi film heroes who would have recognised this film’s intention and agreed to be a part of it, but Bobby Deol did and that itself is commendable.
There’s a simple charm to the story, and the supporting characters lend credibility, but alas, the screenplay moves at a snail-like pace, and goes into bizarre territory by the time the curtains come down.
Two item songs that pop out of the blue, and poor production values including Binod Pradhan’s less-than-spectacular cinematography are the low points in this film.
But because it’s sincere and because it makes its point in an imaginative, unconventional way, I’m going with two out of five and an average rating for director Samir Karnik’s Nanhe Jaisalmer – it’s a film to take your kids to.
