Mumbai: India's richest Municipal body – the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has an annual budget of Rs 8,000 crore, is all set for elections in the New Year.

From roads to potholes and from encroached pavements to overflowing drains – the patience of the Mumbaikar has been tested at every turn over the past few years and now they will decide whether there will be a change of guard and that decision will be made on February 1, 2007.

The State Election Commission has declared the poll date for Mumbai as well as Thane, Pune, Nagpur and Nashik.

The code of conduct has come into effect, which means that none of the political parties will be able to announce or inaugurate any new projects till the end of elections.

In Mumbai alone 227 wards will go for elections. The counting date has been set for February 2, 2007.

The Sena-BJP alliance has held power in Mumbai's civic body for over two decades.

But with so many issues crippling the city, will Mumbaikars finally change the power equation in the civic body? Come February and we will find that out.
