COIMBATORE: A youth belonging to a scheduled community was beaten up by three others after an argument over playing a cellphone ringtone, police said on Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday in the city at a dormitory run by a leading hotel for its workers in the Mettupalayam road at Saibaba Colony.
M Pandiyan (20), hailing from a scheduled community, had set a song praising a Dalit leader as his ringtone, which irked a few youth from another community, police said. “Soon, one K Paneerselvam (24) repeatedly started playing a song hailing a leader from his community. When Pandiyan questioned this, it resulted in a heated verbal exchange between them,” police said.
Soon after, it gave way to a bitter fight. Police said Paneerselvam, along with his friends B Chandrasekar and R Muthu Kumar, started physically assaulting Pandiyan with wooden logs.
Pandiayan was admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case against the three accused under five different sections, including the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and took them to custody.
