Price rise burns hole in consumers' pocket

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Prices of food products and commodities are going up, with inflation figures released on Friday at a 59-week record high of 6.68 per cent.

In New Delhi, Chaitali Mitra's shopping excursions are getting less frequent.

For Mitra, a homemaker, managing a family of three in the capital with the price rise is becoming difficult. The prices of rice, dal and mustard oil and other essential food items have been rising for the past few months.

"I am having to spend around Rs 2500 for the amount of groceries I would have spent around Rs 2000 for. Where do middle class people like us go? Our salaries are not rising at the same rate," Mitra says.

In Mumbai's Mahadevkar household, capsicums are hot favourite but thanks to the spiraling prices of vegetables, it will not be on the menu regularly.

Dr Anjali Mahadevkar, a psychologist by profession, is now in a mood for rationing and is talking about cheaper vegetables

"I have to be very careful about what to buy and what not to buy because of the prices," Dr Anjali says.

It's not just food down south in Bangalore as 30-year-old techie Hitin Kumar plans to get married soon and wants to move into a bigger flat. But rising prices of steel and other construction material may scuttle his plans

"I am constructing a house and planning to get married soon. I want to know what the government is doing about the rise in inflation?" Hitin asks.

Seven straight weeks of rising prices have burnt holes in quite a few pockets and with inflation showing little signs of cooling off relief for the consumer could be some time in coming.
