Kolkata: After directing period films like Chokher Bali and Antarmahal, Rituparno Ghosh is all set to tell a different kind of story.
His new film Doshor, which will be his first release for the year, is set on a monochrome canvas.
The film explores the troubled relationship of an urban couple played by Konkona Sen Sharma and Bengali superstar Prosenjit.
"The film is entirely an artistic decision. It has no intentions of gimmick behind it and the entire film is therefore very focused," says the filmmaker.
"Since it deals with various couples, it's not a very protagonist centric film. It deals with the issue of marital infidelity as seen across various couples. I think that the black and white serves as a colour umbrella," he adds.
And while Rituparno gave the film a different treatment, the producer devised innovative ways of marketing it. The promos for the film were a part of an exhibition of black and white pictures by renowned cameramen.
And if the turnout at the exhibition is a measure of people's expectations from the award-winning director, producers need not worry about the film's prospects.
CEO, Planman Motion Pictures, Subho Shekhar Bhattacharjee confesses that when the Doshor team began shooting, they were a tad apprehensive.
"But after the film was completed and we saw it on the big screen, we thought - oh my god! Nothing's gonna really happen. It is not a risk anymore," he adds.
A typical Bengali smart-budget film, Doshor cost nearly Rs 65 lakh. And compared with the cost of production, producers are spending a remarkable big sum - reportedly Rs 25 lakh - to market it.
Doshor premiers on the April 14 in Kolkata amid huge expectations.
