The rain-fed flow of the 1400 km long Krishna river begins in Mahabaleshwar, nestled 4000 meters in the Western Ghats. However, there are issues even as the water flows down the Ghats.
The Krishna is caught in the crosshairs of politics in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra over the Almatti and Koyana dams. Farmers like Chandrakanth Ramappa bear the brunt, as the mismanaged waters rise dangerously every monsoon.
A little deviation to Hyderabad, shows us how a river fares under urban pressure with its industrial outlets and encroachment.
“Heavy migration is one issue. Land is treated like a commodity and the government is indiscriminately converting all the water bodies,” says Captain Rama Rao of Forum for Better Hyderabad.
Even as the city's waters are dwindling, the industries in the vicinity pump affluents that threaten the lives of the villagers. Sampath is just one among many others who is suffering with a malignant tumor.
In this quest to grab more water than the river can provide, River Krishna may be living on borrowed time.
