Kolkata: The mystery over the death of Kolkata-based graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman has got murkier. The first investigating officer, who would have been a key witness for the CBI's case, was found murdered on the railway tracks on Wednesday.
Arindam Manna was discovered dead in much the same manner as Rizwan himself was. Preliminary investigations suggest Manna committed suicide, but his family and friends suspect foul play.
Manna's friend Pavan Lal says, "For the last few days he was receiving threats and pressure from influential people. So even if police may call this a suicide, we know he was murdered."
Manna was among the few people who had found Rizwan dead beside the tracks. He collected circumstantial evidence and eyewitness accounts which were shared with the CBI. Though the accused are out on bail, the trial is on in full swing and he would have been a key witness for the CBI.
Rizwan's brother, Rukbanur Rahaman says, "What has happened now is very frightening for all these witnesses as that they might be, in some extreme cases, eliminated from giving any witness in the court boxes."
Rizwan's case had led to public outrage in Kolkata and now this second death is likely to fuel the protests even more.
The unpleasant twists and turns in the Rizwanur Rehaman case simply refuse to end. While the main trial for the crime has not even begun, such developments would complicate the case even further and delay the process of justice.
