New Delhi: The Justice for Rizwan campaign is now having a political impact beyond West Bengal.
Political groups are making the most of the opportunity to target the Left-backed SFI in Jawaharlal Nehru University of New Delhi.
With the annual student union elections about to get underway, tensions are running high on campus. For students getting ready for the polls, suddenly all the problems of the world are now topics of impassioned debates and discussions at the university.
At the top of this year's agenda is Rizwanur Rehman's death and its aftermath, judging by the numerous posters plastered all across the campus, some demanding a fair investigation, others carrying allegations of minority witch-hunting.
The case, currently ruling the minds of the ideologically-charged campus, knits together class as well as religion, both of which are key issues in this year's student union polls.
The AISA, affiliated with the radical CPI(ML) insists that the Rizwanur case is extremely relevent to JNU because the university has - like West Bengal - consistently elected a Left party for decades.
Although in the past, supporters of the SFI - which currently holds the post of the president - have been the first to raise slogans against the state's apathy, this year JNU's elections are a lot more interesting because the state in question is also ruled by the Left. But the SFI counters this by saying that the Ultra-Left have always been the most belligerent critic of moderates.
While the comrades on JNU plan their strategies, students are waiting to hear their leaders hold forth on the issue. However, there is caveat: the student body is adamant that they do not want the debate to be reduced to a blame game.
