Kolkata: Nearly a fortnight has passed since 30-year old graphics designer Rizwan-Ur Rahaman was found dead on the tracks under mysterious circumstances in the outskirts of Kolkata and skeletons have now started tumbling out of the cupboard.
The latest is the admission made by former cricketer Snehasish Ganguly, brother of Sourav Ganguly, that he was the one who had introduced the Todis to Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee to help them sort their problems.
Says Snehasish Ganguly, ""One shouldn't interfere in personal problems. He asked for help and wanted to meet Prasun Mukherjee. I arranged for the appointment. It was only an effort to help him out."
Rizwan and his wife Priyanka were summoned to the Lalbazar police headquarters the very next day of this meeting and separated, allegedly upon active intervention of two senior IPS officers.
And the Calcutta High Court, which is hearing the case of writ petition filed by Rizwan's relatives, has now added the elder Ganguly as one of the respondents.
Says the petitioner's counsel, Kalyan Bandyopadhyay, "Prasun Mukherjee entertained Ashok Todi because of the request made by Snehasish Ganguly and he sent it to the detective department. We are saying that now it appears that influential personalities are involved in this matter for which the police had acted contrary to all law and beyond their jurisdiction."
While the Bengal CID continues to investigate the case vis-à-vis the judicial inquiry which has been ordered, prayers have been made in court for an independent CBI inquiry.
Meanwhile, the top brass of Kolkata Police are faced with the uncomfortable question of why it took sides of the high and mighty.
