New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, met murdered graphics designer, Rizwanur Rahman's mother at her residence on Saturday, in what is being seen as a damage control exercise on part of the state government.
Earlier Rizwan's mother, Kishwar Jahan, had expressed desire to meet the Chief Minister, but then changed her mind for unknown reasons.
On Friday, Bhattarchjee made a statement saying it was his misfortune that Rizwan's mother had declined to meet him, but that he was still open to talks.
He has assured the family of justice and requested the family to have faith in the CID and judicial probe.
"The Chief Minister told us he was convinced that the police had a definite role in Rizwan's death and that officials at Lal Bazar intruded in Rizwan and Priyanka's marital life. The CM also that he was very sad and he promised definite action, but asked for time. We demanded a CBI inquiry," Rizwan's brother, Rukbanur said.
The state government had earlier argued in the Calcutta High Court that a CBI probe cannot be initiated into the case as there is no formal record of a complaint on the alleged police threats.
"The Chief Minister has told us that after the inquiry is completed, action will be taken against everybody found guilty including the police officers," Rukbanur was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
According to PTI, Bhattacharjee was greeted with black flags and posters demanding justice and slogans like "Chief Minister Hai Hai" and "Please Give Us Justice".
Kishwar Jahan meanwhile was quoted by PTI as saying that she had some faith in the Chief Minister.
The mysterious death of the graphics designer has been making headlines for the last couple of weeks.
Kolkata Police Commissioner, Prasun Mukherjee has been severely criticised for his handling of the case.
Prasun Mukherjee had come under fire for defending police action in the case, after which, a witness complained of intimidation by the Kolkata Police before the West Bengal Human Rights Commission.
The Muslim computer graphics teacher was found dead near railway tracks on September 21 following his marriage to Priyanka, daughter of businessman Ashok Todi on August 18.
