Politicians try to cash in on Rizwan case

West Bengla: Foul play, it seems, is involved in the death of key witness in the Rizwanur case, Arindam Manna whose body was recovered near a railway track on Wednesday Kolkata.

With elections on mind, the opposition in West Bengal is trying to use it to its advantage.

Injuries on Manna's body suggest that he was possibly tortured before he died.

His hands were broken, his torso severed and one eye had popped out.

The body itself was found by the railway track, far away from his home and office.

"If someone who lives in Dasnagar wants to commit suicide, why would he travel 60 kilometer and commit the act in Mankundu. And why would he call his mother and say that my life is in great danger?" asks Subrata Hazra, Arindam's brother-in-law.

A second autopsy was conducted on Manna's body after his family complained that the first one was held in a hurry.

The West Bengal CID has started investigations but the case is getting more intriguing.

The SIM cards in Manna's phone and his bag were missing.

Investigators still do not know who was threatening Manna and whether his death has any links with the Rizwanur case.

"They are sending messages also to us that this is an example and warning… that if you don't become hostile in the court of law, then you might face the same consequences," Sujato Bhadra, a Human Rights activist, says.

More than a day after Manna's death, it's the murder suspicion that's getting more deep rooted than suicide.

And if murder is established it would, ahead of the elections, leave the West Bengal government red-faced like it did when Rizwanur died.

The death has already led to a huge public outrage and the opposition parties are cashing in.

The Congress called for a 12-hour bandh and Trinamool Congress workers demonstrated outside the morgue, demanding they be let inside.
