New Delhi: At least eight people were injured in violent clashes between fans of the new Indian Idol, Prashant Tamang and the locals in Siliguri.

The clash started near a hospital, while Tamang fans were carrying out a procession in protest against a radio DJ Jonathan Brady’s derogatory remarks about Gorkhas.

Brady who is popularly known as Nitin after a programme called Ulta Pulta Nitin that he used to host on some other FM channel, apparently commented in a live broadcast that “shopkeepers will now have to make their own security arrangements as Gorkhas have taken to singing.” The remark was made on his new programme, Khurafati Nitin on Red FM.

A violent clash erupted between supporters of Tamang and local residents of Siliguri.

Tamang’s fans turned furious and burned jeeps. They had to be caned by the police. The violence led to firing by the police and eight people have reportedly been injured of whom two have bullet wounds.

The West Bengal government has now promised to take action against Red FM channel.

“We are taking measures to take action against the concerned FM channel,” says Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

Meanwhile Gorkhas across the board have reacted strongly to the alleged remarks aired on radio protesting the stereotyping.

"He should be pulled off air. How can he stereotype us like this? Does he know what Gorkhas have done for the country?” asks activist, Rashmi Deewan.

Politicians have now jumped into the fray and a bandh has been called in Darjeeling on Saturday supported by political parties across the board.
