Road named after Olympic medalist Mary Kom in interior Manipur

Imphal: A road in interior Churachandpur district of Manipur has been named after Olympic bronze medal winner pugilist MC Mary Kom. During a reception held in honour of Kom at Churachandpur district headquarters, Manipur Health Minister T Phungzathang said government has decided to name the road connecting Churachandpur town to the office of the deputy commissioner's office as 'Mary Kom Ring Road'.

Phungzathang said the government would also sanction Rs 10 lakh from the Department of the District Rural Development Agency to construct a gallery at the Churachandpur public ground in the name of the ace boxer.

Kom hails from Churachandpur district, though she stays at her official residence at Langol in Imphal west district. Hundreds of villagers attended the function on Monday.

The government has named the road connecting Churachandpur to the office of the Dy commissioner\'s office as \'Mary Kom Ring Road\'.

Meanwhile, 64-year-old Dongjapao, who was attending the function, was killed when a police constable, deployed for security, accidentally fired a shot from his service rifle. The constable has been detained by the police.
