New Delhi: A 62-year-old retired Army officer died fighting his last battle with two petty criminals who wanted to loot him. When Ratan Singh, a retired captain and the owner of a milk booth in Sector 14, Gurgaon, tried to stop the two men from escaping, the culprits shot him in the neck and fled.
ACP City Gurgaon, Surendra Singh said, "Two people came on a motorcycle and I have been told that they were wearing school uniforms."
The police officials say the young boys were between 18 and 20 years of age but aren't sure whether the accused were really students or were dressed like that to deceive. Residents of Gurgaon took to the streets protesting against the daylight murder, which is just one more in the list of recent crimes in the area.
Gurgaon Police Commissioner, S S Deswal said in an attempt at controlling the situation, "Everything is under control. We have identified gangs and we have formed teams to nab them."
Though the police sounds confident, the crime statistics of the last few weeks cleary don't inspire any faith in the authorities. Just three days back, the owner of a prominent bakery was shot at by unidentified robbers.
On Monday, an MNC employee was shot dead allegedly over ransom demands.
On Tuesday night, a 15-year-old was allegedly raped by her neighbour and Wednesday morning saw another loot attempt. The police hasn't been able to arrest a single person in any of these cases.
Police officials say they are often helpless due to lack of resources. Gurgaon has a population of more than 25 lakh people and the number of policemen is just 3,800 while the required strength is that of 10,000 policemen. In such a scenario it becomes very easy for trigger-happy criminals to commit crimes and get away.
