Ahmedabad: Filmmakers, artistes and activists have come together to fight a “common foe” - Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Their WMDs - Weapons of Modi Destruction, that is - are movies, documentaries, street plays, art exhibitions and even the tried-and-tested formula of door-to-door campaigning.
"The message is clear: Defeat Modi, Kaadhi Naakho (Remove him),” says Human Rights Activist, Shabnam Hashmi.
Filmmaker Rakesh Sharma has just released two films - one revealing startling figures of farmers' suicides in Modi's “Vibrant Gujarat” and the other documenting the saffronisation of the Dalit population and its consequences.
"We're looking at a couple of thousand of farmers' suicides, which is in the same category as Vidharbha. They say Modi is a Vikas Purush and I wanted to shatter that myth of Vibrant Gujarat,” says Sharma.
Says artist Mallika Sarabhai, "Music, performance and cinema are amazing media to break through prejudice. I think the more it is used, the better.”
It’s almost like filmmakers have joined forces in the election campaign. If films against Modi have been distributes among people, a film in praise of Modi is already complete.
Gujarat No Naath (guardian of Gujarat) is BJP's answer to the Chief Minister's critics.
"It is election time and everyone will try all kinds of campaign tactics. I think nobody should be objecting to that,” says Spokesperson, Gujarat BJP, Yamal Vyas.
The party wants the movie to hit the screens before the elections. But the film is yet to get an approval from the Censor Board. But it's the voter who will give the call for the final cut.
