NEW DELHI: Perhaps for the first time in Parliamentary history, a top diplomat will appear before lawmakers in New Delhi, where he will be expected to undergo grilling over his reported controversial remarks.
Ronen Sen, the man who allegedly called the critics of the Indo-US nuclear deal 'headless chickens', will face the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee today.
In August, Sen had said in an interview, "The deal has been approved by the Indian cabinet. So, why do you have all this running around like headless chickens, looking for a comment here or comment there, and these little storms in a tea-cup?"
The remark sparked an uproar in Parliament which lasted several days.
Sen later explained that he had used the remarks to refer to journalists and not MPs. He offered an unconditional apology to the offended MPs.
The Ministry of External Affairs, which received the communication from Sen, requested that in view of the apology the matter be dropped.
However, in view of the strong feelings of MPs on the issue, Speaker and Lok Sabha Chairman, Somnath Chatterjee, referred it to the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee, which is headed by Congress MP V Kishorechandra Deo.
Sen is also likely to meet PM Manmohan Singh to discuss the nuclear deal.
