New Delhi: It came as a tough order of the Delhi High Court when it announced a range of fines on those violating the traffic rules in the the wake of growing unruly behaviour on city’s roads.
However, now the government is coming up with more steps to ensure orderly traffic behaviour on the city’s roads.
Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on Tuesday told Delhi Police they should install big screens at important road intersections showing live images of traffic violations.
Gupta suggested that it would have a psychological effect on unruly motorists.
News agency PTI quoted Gupta as saying that, “The big screens will be psychologically helpful in the process of enabling citizens to imbibe a sense of discipline.”
He added that as people tend to become suddenly more disciplined if they come to know that they are being watched, perhaps even out of fear.
The Delhi Police already monitors traffic movement at important intersections using cameras.
"Our endeavour is to make maximum use of technology so that we can be an international standard organisation by 2010 when the city hosts the Commonwealth Games," PTI quoted City Police Commissioner K K Paul as saying.
The fines for violation of rules are:
- Smoking while driving – Rs 600
- Using a mobile phone while driving – Rs 1,500
- Drunken driving – Rs 2,500
