New Delhi: At a time when women sportspersons in the country are finding it increasingly difficult to get the best of facilities and sponsors, a women's golf tournament is offering a prize money of Rs 2 crore — the highest so far in any women's sporting event in the country.

A gleaming Women's Indian Open trophy along with the big contenders for this year's title. The tournament, now in its second year, is now offering a hike of 20 per cent from last year, and that means golf has now become the richest women's sport in India.

"We definitely want to get on to the European PGA, and like I said, everything is money and the moment the prize money is increased, the European players come in, all the better players come in. So we are hoping towards that," says Kavita Singh, the Vice-President of Women's Golf Association of India.

"India is going to be a superpower in home-grown players. And when they say home-grown players, it doesn't mean that you have been in the United States training, maybe not. But just the natural ability of a girl here, is going to carry her to that level," adds Champika Sayal, Secretary of the WGAI.

Nalini, a professional golfer, is all for it too. "Yes, definitely it's a career option. I think more and more girls will be motivated to turn pro. And since we can see it has started so well, obviously it will boom in the coming years," she beams.

Set to be the second stopover of the Asian Tour, the 54-hole strokeplay event will take place in March at the DLF Golf and Country Club in Gurgaon.

An increased prize pool, a stage to showcase India's best talent in the sport and bright young faces from around Asia, this edition comes with a lot of things to look forward to.
