New Delhi: Tata Motors have run into trouble after the Delhi government slapped a fine of Rs 4 crore on them for the recent DTC bus mishaps.

Four of the Delhi’s much-hyped low floor buses caught fire in a span of just three weeks forcing the state government to fine Tata Motors.

“The fine is already on them. Their payment hasn’t been given and till we feel satisfied that they are attending all the problems that have been identified we will not be able to move forward,” says Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The government has also reportedly stopped payment of Rs 150 crore for 331 new low floor buses to the company.

Forty-five days have been given to Tata Motors to thoroughly check all the buses in service. However, Tata Motors say there is nothing seriously wrong with either the electricals or the CNG circuit.

“In the last two days we have come across four buses where we find break jamming is resulting due to overheat of the break drum and in one or two cases smoke has also come. The drivers have been advised that in such cases they should stop the bus and offload people,” says president commercial vehicle business unit, Ravindra.

Even the government is saying there was only one case in which the bus actually caught fire.

“Only the one that took place on December 3 was when it caught fire, rest were technical snags,” says Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.

These are the same low floor DTC buses that the Government is banking on for Commonwealth Games 2010 to ferry tourists across the city.
