Challenged by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and under pressure from the Sangh Parivar the senior BJP leader has said that that he never had any name of any mole.
First it was the Prime Minister who denied that Jaswant Singh had given the name of the mole and on Monday, Jaswant Singh claimed that actually there never was a mole.
"I have no difficulty, whatsoever, in responding to anything that the House wants to be clarified," Jaswant Singh said in Rajya Sabha.
So what prompted this big U-turn? After all throughout the last week, Singh had repeatedly made claims that there was a mole in Narasimha Rao's PMO.
He had been making his claims on the basis of a letter he had got from an American senator.
But sensing that his own party members weren't ready to believe that letter, he has decided against naming the mole at least for the time being.
At a meeting of top BJP leaders a decision was taken that Singh must make a statement in Parliament about his intentions.
"Jaswant Singh has already told in Parliament that he is ready to answer any question. He is a responsible person," BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
But the Congress is already sharpening its knives. There are many within the UPA who feel that Singh should either come clean or be ready to face strict action.
That could mean the matter being referred to the Ethics Committee of the Rajya Sabha.
"Jaswant Singhji owns it to the nation to to put the facts before the country and I think Manmohan Singhji has done the right thing by asking him to do so," Congress leader Natwar Singh said.
But the Government, too, is being criticised by some
"Durbhagya se ye situation hai ki Narasimha Raoji ko bachane ka Congress ka koi manas mujhe laga nahi (I don't think Congress wants to come out in defence of Narasimha Rao)," former minister of state, PMO, Bhuvanesh Chaturvedi said.
