RSS calls Sonia for Golwalkar's honour

New Delhi: The birth centenary celebrations of RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) ideologue Guru Golwalkar on February 18 will not be an isolated event.

The RSS is inviting Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and heads of all other political parties for the event.

The move seems strategically planned because when the Congress staged an event commemorating the centenary of Satyagraha in Delhi last month, it had not invited the Sangh and NDA parties.

"Yes, we are inviting her (Gandhi) and heads of all other political parties besides top academics, writers, sportspersons and celebrities from different walks of life to this programme whose central theme will be social equality," zonal RSS chief Bajrang Lal Gupt was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, RSS chief K S Sudarshan and the Ayodhya movement leader Ritambhara will be among the key speakers at the February 18 event at Burari ground in Delhi, he added.

The Sangh leader rejected suggestions that the event, which he insisted would draw up to 200,000 people, was aimed at popularising the BJP.

"This is certainly not to benefit any political party," he was quoted as saying.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who is part of the celebrations' committee, however, is not on the list of speakers.
