New Delhi: An engineer student has claimed that he was harassed for over a year by authorities at the Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) because he filed an RTI.
Girish Kumar Gupta, a final year student of the DCE, had a fairly uneventful time in college until he filed an RTI in January 2008 seeking to know among other things details about his syllabus and about funds allocated to his college.
"On January 24 they called my mother and said I was mentally ill. They forced me to go back home for a month. I filed RTI in January 2008. They didn't accept it. Then I went to President and then they accepted and replied in three months. But all the answers were unsatisfactory," said Gupta.
Later over another incident the college issued him a show cause notice for alleged breach of discipline. He did reply but the authorities said he did not and promptly expelled him
"There was something illegal happening in college due to which I complained to college authorities. My seniors got annoyed and misbehaved with me," Gupta claimed.
It was only after the Delhi High Court intervened that Gupta was given back his hostel accommodation. But now he's back to square one as no action has been taken against the college authorities for harassing him.
It's been a year since he came back to college but college authorities still maintain they have done no injustice to him.
"He was suspended from the college for misconduct," said DCE Director PB Sharma.
But Delhi University officials disagree.
"Definitely we will look again into this case," promised DU Proctor Dr MM Rehman.
Gupta is now planning to file a fresh RTI petition hoping to seek some more answers this time.
