New Delhi: Justice delayed, is justice denied. Who would understand the meaning of this phrase more than the friends and relatives of Priyadarshini Mattoo, the 23-year-old Delhi University student, who was brutally raped and murdered 10 years ago.
After a decade-long wait for justice, Matto's family has now decided to file a Right to Information (RTI) application to demand disclosure on the apparently dubious aspects of the case.
"I have faith in the people who are with me. I have faith in RTI and I am sure justice will be delivered," Priyadarshini's friend, Indu Jalali said.
Priyadarshini Mattoo was raped and murdered at her South Delhi home. Police reports said Priyadarshini had 35 wounds on her body.
"How many more years will it take for a hearing. We went to CBI and asked the status. The only answer we got from CBI was that there are 6,000 cases pending before Priya's," Jalali said.
The case received a major blow in 1999 when the main accused, Santosh Singh, the son of a senior police officer was let off due to the lack of evidence or in other words simple laxity during investigation.
Notably, the lower court judge had made following observation:
"Though I know he is the man who committed the crime, I acquit him, giving him the benefit of the doubt."
Seven years hence, Priyadarshini's relatives and friends having knocked on all doors, including an RTI application to know the chances of getting justice.
"We saw this hope in RTI Act 2005. We need answers and then only we can take corrective measures. We are hanging in mid-air and this simply means an endless wait," Jalali said.
Meanwhile, the CBI is expected to reply to their application in August, which could be a beginning to justice at last.
