For Rubina Ali, slumgirl is no longer a bad word. In fact, it's also the name of her book that just hit newstands. Written by Anne Berthod and Divya Dugar, its the young actor's life journey from being just another slum kid to being the kid in Slumdog Millionaire.
Slumgirl Dreaming is Rubina Ali's journey to the stars.
Published by Random House, the book is simplistically written with no frills. It's the account of nine-year-old Rubina Ali who managed to get a ringside view of the life of the rich and famous through the success of her film Slumdog Millionaire.
From living in a small shanty in Bandra's garib nagar slums to walking the red carpet at the Oscars, this young girl's life is nothing short of drama.
Sadly, however, drama is exactly what this book lacks. With details of how she played marbles in the slums, to being chosen over 500 kids for the role of young Latika, to meeting the who's who of Bollywood and Hollywood, it's a book that contains details about her life that we already know.
What we don't know however is how scary being alone in a huge hotel room can be for a nine-year-old girl, how the media archlights can hurt just a little too much sometimes and how humiliating it is to return to the slums after an exciting, whirlwind tour of the world.
It is these rare nuggets - few and far between - that make this book a sometimes engaging read.
Pressed between pages, a year in the life of this impoverished celebrity, Slumgirl Dreaming is a breezy read, but it's strictly for those still amazed by her rags-to-riches-to-rags-again story.
