Panchkula: Three chief ministers Bhajan Lal, Bansi Lal and Om Prakash Chautala remained in power as the sordid saga of the Ruchika molestation case played out in Haryana.
While none of them allegedly did anything to bring the then Inspector General of Police SPS Rathore to book, they gave him promotions.
Chautala allegedly elevated Rathore to the post of the Director General of Police Haryana in 1999. However, he denies the charges.
“The promotion was ordered before my tenure. After the court enquiry, we removed him from the DGP’s post,” says Chautala.
He now claims that the sentence in Ruchika case was not enough and Rathore should get more punishment.
“The power is in the hands of court of justice but still the punishment given to Rathore is too less. It should be increased,” he says.
The then DGP of Haryana Police RR Singh had recommended immediate action against his subordinate Rathore.
Singh says justice would have been faster and punishment would have been harsher had it not been for Rathore's political contacts.
“A sentence of six months with a fine of Rs 1000 does not really matter. Changes should be made in our legal system,” suggests Singh.
It took nine years for the police to register a case against Rathore despite of the fact that Singh in his enquiry report against Rathore stated that he had committed a cognisable offence under IPC.
The report also clearly indicated that Rathore had political benefactors who even elevated him to the top position in the police force.
