Delhi runs, Ethiopians win half-marathon

New Delhi: Nearly 25,000 residents of Delhi were up, early and bright on Sunday morning to run in the fourth edition of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon that was flagged off a little after 0700 hrs IST.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna flagged off the marathon that carries a prize money of $2.1 million.

The half marathon, which will cover a distance of 21 km, was flagged off from Central secretariat ground at Vinay Marg.

The first event was for senior citizens (4 km), followed by the Delhi Half Marathon and the Wheel Chair Event (2.5 km). The finale, the six-km Great Delhi Run, started around 0900 hrs IST.

Winners:

  • Ethiopia's Deriba Merga won the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon men's race, setting a new race record of 59.14 mins.
  • Ethiopia's Aselefech Mergia won the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon women's race clocking 68.16 mins.
  • Star attraction

    While the half marathon is best left to professional athletes, the major attraction of the event is the Great Delhi Run, which is expected to be participated by over 15,000 people including several celebrities.

    Around 800 policemen along with 250 security guards are guarding the venue.

    Among the dignitaries present on the occasion were Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi and Athletics Federation of India (AFI) secretary Lalit Bhanot.
