Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses is being adapted for the first time on theatre by a group of German artists.
The first show in Potsdam was held under heavy police presence considering the amount of security concerns it raised.
The book The Satanic Verses created quite a sensation way back in 1988 when it was released with Muslims in several countries accusing the author of insulting Islam.
Salman Rushdie was then forced into hiding for nearly a decade, with Iran's late leader, Ayatollah Khomeini calling for him to be killed. The show's director however, says that it's time that the book be discussed.
Rushdie himself welcomed the play saying, "The novel is freely available, so it's "absurd" to say that it can't be dramatised. I am so glad that it is being done."
He also said that Fitna was nearly as inflammatory as it was touted to be. "It's a storm in a teacup. In free societies, such provocations can also be seen as valuable," he said.
