New Delhi: After more than a year of investigations, the Rajindar Sachar Committee has come up with some innovative recommendations, among them is setting up an equal opportunity commission.

For months, members of the Sachar Committee mapped the social and economic condition of Indian Muslims. T K Oommen was on the team. Now he is waiting to see how the Prime Minister responds to their recommendation to set up an Equal Opportunity Commission.

"We have come across complaints about people denied admission in schools and colleges, not recruited for jobs, not given loans and the perception is because I am M," said Oommen.

And he says the recommendations hit at the core of the problems, which have so far remained un-addressed.

"It will have certainly a legal dimension. It will be interesting to compare the existing body like the NHRC. They deal with a large number of issues mainly in terms of the questions of identity and security. But we are mainly focusing on the issue of equity," Oommen added.

But Oommen is not alone; many people feel that a grievance cell is the need of the hour.

"Right now there is a mood of helplessness within the Muslim community. So, I think that some kind of a mechanism that makes the community feel like it is being looked after," said Writer Farah Naqvi.

Constitutional experts point out that this demand is not completely unfounded.

"An equal opportunities commission to address backwardness on account of religion would certainly be okay. It's permissible and desirable," said Senior Supreme Court Lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

The Sachar Committee has advocated for setting up the Equal Opportunity Commission, a recommendation that might be accepted, because it is in line with Prime Minister's primary objective to empower the Muslims to align themselves with the mainstream society.
