Colombo As the India-Sri Lanka-South Africa cricket tri-series kicks off in the island nation, expectations are soaring and all eyes are set on master blaster Sachin Tendulkar who is back in Team India after a five-month absence due to a surgery on his right shoulder.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN’s Chief Cricket Correspondent Nishant Arora, Sachin Tendulkar talks about his health and the much-touted return.
Sachin Tendulkar: I am extremely happy to be back in the team. It was tough to be away and was rather a forced break, as I did not have an option. It’s really nice to be back after four-and-a-half months. My shoulder has been holding up quite nicely and the loads have gradually increased. I had to follow a particular programme which was given to me by my doctors and physios.
Nishant Arora: Coming back to this tournament, this is a big one. Three very good One-Day sides are contesting each other. How can it be a stepping-stone to a long-term goal – the World Cup in this case?
Sachin Tendulkar: It’s important because I would say that not just this year, but every time in the past five to six years, we’ve been coming to Sri Lanka. I would say that it is the beginning of the season for us. It will be extremely important to gather momentum here.
With 14,146 runs in 362 matches and 39 centuries, both world records, Tendulkar's arrival adds strength to India's batting in this series against South Africa and hosts Sri Lanka.
The seven-match series that includes the final will start on Monday at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium.
