Kanpur: Kanpur is in uproar after the death of a young cricketer. Why did Subhash Dixit - a former captain with India's Under-15 team give up on his future - and commit suicide?

Residents of Kanpur protested the death of Subhash Dixit, the former Under-15 cricketer who killed himself on Saturday.

Dixit committed suicide by jumping from the top of this building, ending a life that police say was filled with financial problems.

"We saw a man jumping from top. I informed the authorities about that," Mahesh, an eyewitness to the shocking incident, says.

The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has said it will give Rs 1 lakh to Dixit's family as compensation for his death. But the family is demanding Rs 10 lakh from the state government.

Dixit led the national under-15 team to victory in the Asian Championship in Malaysia in 2000 and also captained the Under-19 team in UP.

But he could never manage to make it to the Uttar Pradesh Ranji Trophy side, and had to struggle to make ends meet.

"He (Subhash) was upset about the politics in the UPCA. He kept looking for jobs and was very depressed," Rachana Tiwari, Subhash's wife says.

The cricketer's body has been handed over to his family for cremation. Police say they will conduct further investigations to find out the cause of the suicide.
