New Delhi: In India the political circles have offered a mixed reaction to the death penalty awarded to Saddam Hussein.

Quite expectedly the Left in India has been swift and harsh in its reaction to the Saddam Hussein verdict.

CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat says, “This is an outrageous decision. It is a rigged verdict through a trial which is a farce.”

It’s quite understandable – the red brigade has reaped a rich political harvest of its anti-US policy on Iraq in Kerala and West Bengal polls recently. They had also boycotted the US President's George Bush's visit to India this year.

CPI Secretary D Raja says, “I am questioning the very trial itself. Because the trial took place when the country is under occupation of foreign forces. So it is obvious for everyone to question the trial.”

The BJP, which initiated the pro-US tilt in the foreign policy, has been quiet perhaps waiting for an official reaction from the Government. But for the Congress its a tough call. Its Government at the Centre has been negotiating hard with the US – a nuclear deal.

Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi says, “We hope and trust that the verdict will not adversely affect the process of restoration of peace in Iraq.”

Former Indian diplomats say there is no need for India to comment on what is an internal development in Iraq but India did condemn the hanging of Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto by General Zia ul Haq 27 years ago.
