‘Safai’ Baba’s quest: Clean polluted Punjab river

Jalandhar (Punjab): As a war against pollution, some men are putting up a blockade in a polluted drain to prevent sewage from entering the Kali Bein River near Jalandar

The men are a part of a campaign to protect the river, led by Balbir Singh more popularly known in these parts, Baba Seechewal.

“The right to live is being snatched away due to the dirty waste water.

This is against the law and the administration is responsible for this. Those responsible for polluted water should handle it themselves,” says Baba Seechwal.

Baba Seechewal has been trying to clean the polluted Kali Bein since 2000, by encouraging community participation.

Many locals living on the banks of the river support the Baba's measures while industries try to pass the pollution buck.

“Government policies are responsible for the lack of infrastructure. Industries should not be shut down,” says NS Saggu of Industrialist Association.

The local administration seems to have been shocked into action.

“We have formed teams to figure out from where the dirty water is coming. We shall now work with industries to either install treatment plants or shut down,” says ADC, Jalandhar, S Marar.

Keeping the 160 kilometre long river clean has been a mission for Baba Seechewal for eight long years.

His supporters say they will now try to stop polluted water from entering the river, and force cities and industries to think of better ways to manage their waste.
