New Delhi: The craze to ride a superbike brought an end to Mohammad Ayazuddin, the 19-year-old son of former India captain Mohammand Azharuddin. It also brought the spotlight back on issue of the superbikers and their safety.
These high end bikes are a rage not just among youngsters from affluent families but corporate executives, doctors and pilots as well. Like, Ambika Sharma, an entrepreneur by profession and a biker by passion. She says the controls are in the hands of parents.
Ambika says, "It's the parents who give in to the pressure and buy high-end bikes for their kids without ensuring they have proper training and gear to handle it."
Expert bikers insist that safety comes first. Sharing a few mantras, they say it's the safety jacket with padded elbows, shoulder comes first.
Nnext comes the back cover followed by knee pads which are made of fibre. Riding boots with special ankle pads to protect the legs, a pair of good riding gloves and finally a good quality helmet with a visor.
Trying out new stunts and racing on roads is a strict no.
Dr Arun Thareja said, "The government should consider having special driving licenses for superbikes and bikers below 25 years of age should not be given those licenses."
So, before you hop on to one of these dream machine for a spin, don't forget the safety tips so that the ride remains a dream ride and doesn't turn into a nightmare.
