Chennai: On Saturday, the Sathya Sai Baba visited Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi at his residence.

He even gave a magic ring to Karunanidhi's grand nephew Dayanidhi Maran and the state's PWD minister Durai Murugan.

On Sunday it was time for atheist Karunanidhi to sit right next to Baba on a stage where he explained why he liked the Baba so much despite his strong atheist ideology.

"Whether it is a leader or a saint, the only motive is service to man and that's what the Baba is doing," Karunanidhi told a rapt audience.

The function was held to thank Baba for taking up the project to bring water to Chennai from River Krishna in Andhra Pradesh, but politicians always ask for more and the state's now asking Baba to help in a project to clean Chennai's sewerage filled River Cooum.

And it's not just the DMK that's struck by the Baba. His latest devotee is none other than Railway Minister Lalu Prasad.

"I never used to believe in babas, but after I met Sathya Sai Baba, my views have changed," says he.

And in a crowd of politicians the God Man's message was simple - "We are all one. We are one country and we have to stay united."

And with Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy on the same stage, this was perhaps an important message - especially at a time when Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are waiting for the final order from the Cauvery Water Tribunal, though it's doubtful whether even the Baba's magic will be able to keep the two states together on that issue.
