Chandigarh: A doctor with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) who tried to unearth corruption in his organisation is now in the hospital fearing for his life.
SAI medical officer Dr Sajib Nandi was attacked on Monday evening on his way home. He lost consciousness after he was hit on his head.
The attack has left him with cuts on his eye orbits and nose.
Dr Nandi had made 244 enquiries to the SAI in Patiala, seeking information on appointments and progress in vigilance cases against certain senior officials.
"I asked for certain information which could have also led to some people losing their jobs. I will tell the police what happened. This is for sure that it is was NIS (National Institue of Sports) supporters who have attacked me," says Dr Nandi.
Dr Nandi is on leave without pay.
He was earlier transferred to Bangalore but didn't comply with the order as he wanted to unearth the wrongdoings at SAI Patiala.
Police say the doctor has named a senior officer of SAI Patiala as the person behind the attack. But no one has been arrested yet.
"The doctor has lodged a complaint with us that he has been attacked. He has named the executive director of NIS as a suspect. We have begun investigations and no one will be spared," says Patiala SSP Arpit Shukla.
Meanwhile, SAI is maintaining a stiff silence on the issue. It has been more than a month since Dr Nandi filed the applications seeking information from the organisation, but there's been no response.
