He is a movie star, a star son and he will be carrying the Olympic torch in New Delhi. Saif Ali Khan is all set for the Olympic run on Thursday, as he tells CNN-IBN's Sushant Mehta.
Sushant Mehta: Is carrying the Olympic torch a matter of pride more than sponsor commitment?
Saif Ali Khan: It is a matter of great pride because the Olympics is one of the greatest sporting events in the world ever from ancient times and it is really special and wonderful to be a part of it both as a brand ambassador and as a citizen of the country.
Sushant Mehta: There has been a controversy of sorts with thhe Tibetan movement parallel to the Olympic run. People like Kiran Bedi and Bhaichung Bhutia have decided to boycott the relay. What is your take on this?
Saif Ali Khan: Maybe I am being a bit idealistic, but I feel that sports and politics should be separated. We have issues with Pakistan over Kashmir but we still play cricket with them, England has issues with North Ireland but they still play soccer with them, so I don't see why Olympics should be stopped. I look up to the Dalai Lama with a great deal of reverence and he too is for the Olympics.
Sushant Mehta: If something happens while you are carrying the Olympic torch, are you prepared for that?
Saif Ali Khan: Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion. When we have been invited to carry the torch — I assume everyone has been invited for a reason — there would obviously be supporters of Olympics too. I really don't think that it is right to isolate or discriminate against anyone.
Sushant Mehta: Moving on to another issue, Health Minister Ramadoss has said that you had a heart attack after eating chips when all that happened was a bit of a chest pain. What do you make of that?
Saif Ali Khan: It was almost a heart attack. It was a clot forming in the artery after exerting myself a lot dancing in the heat, but that was only related to smoking cigarettes. But I would also like to tell the gentleman with great respect to take it easy, because eating junk food is fun. It's a part of life.
Sushant Mehta: In Tashan, you play Jitendra Jimmy ...
Saif Ali Khan: Well the idea of the publicity is that we don't publicise the film, but yes, it's the wickedest role that I have done till date. It's a great film, but we are not allowed to say anything about it except that it's going to be amazing.
Sushant Mehta: There are rumours that you and Kareena Kapoor are planning on tying the knot after the release of Tashan. Any truth in that.
Saif Ali Khan: No, there is no truth in that at all. Right now, we need to concentrate on our work and it's hard enough to even get a weekend together, let alone get married. You know Akki (Akshay Kumar) is like an elder brother and we had a great time working together in the film. He gives me great advice and he has given me a lot of advice now too (laughs).
