New Delhi: There was a major drama in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday when a Samajwadi Party MP, Yashvir Singh, snatched the SC/ST Quota in Promotion Bill (Constitution (117th Amendment)) from Minister of State in PMO V Narayanasami while he was reading it in the House. Congress President Sonia Gandhi tried to snatch the Bill back from the Samajwadi Party MP but failed to do so.
Following the snatching of the Bill, a minor scuffle broke out between Congress and Samajwadi Party MPs. The Lok Sabha had to be adjourned for the day after the scuffle.
Earlier, the SC/ST Quota in Promotion Bill was tabled in the House. The Bill has already been passed in the Rajya Sabha despite strong opposition from the Samajwadi Party. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supported the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, it is in two minds now with a section of Brahmin leaders of the party saying the party will lose out on upper caste votes if the Bill is passed.
BJP's Gorakhpur MP Yogi Adityanath has already said that he will flout the party whip and vote against the Bill in the Lok Sabha.
