Political circles speculate NCP-Cong merger

New Delhi: NCP leader PA Sangma's apology to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi for raking up her foreign origin issue has sparked fresh speculation about the possible merger of Sharad Pawar-led party with Congress.

The Congress meanwhile has said that it is for NCP to take a call on the issue.

"These are policy-related issues. First, they (NCP) have to decide about it and after that the party (Congress) has to take a view on it. No comments can be made on this issue so lightly," AICC General Secretary Janardan Dwivedi said.

He was responding to a question on whether Congress would agree to a merger with NCP after Sangma apologised to Sonia for raking up her foreign origin issue a decade ago.

"I told her I am sorry for what had happened 10 years ago. I wanted to apologise for what had happened," the NCP leader, who had a meeting with Sonia a few days ago, said.

Sangma's remarks were significant as he, Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar parted ways with Congress on Sonia's foreign origin issue.

Sangma on Friday said Gandhi was "very gracious" and remarked "past is past, forget it." The NCP co-founder also felt that foreign origin was "no longer an issue".

Asked to comment on the apology, Dwivedi said, "Whatever Sangmaji has said it must be right if he said it with conviction."

Tripathi also said that these meetings between UPA leaders was a welcome trend and should continue.
