New Delhi: Sania Mirza justified her world No 30. rank by defeating Martina Hingis of Switzerland in their second round match in the East West Bank Classic tennis tournament at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old Sania beat world No. 12 Hingis in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at the $600,000 Tier II tournament.
In her first round match, Sania had no trouble against world No. 109 Alesandra Wozniak, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Hingis had got a bye in the first round of the tournament.
In the doubles, Sania and her new partner Bethanie Mattek of the USA will take on Janette Husarova of Slovakia and Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands.
