New Delhi: Sania Mirza's family has reportedly called off her engagement to Mohammad Sohrab Mirza.
"We were friends for half a decade, but found ourselves incompatible during our engagement period. I wish Sohrab the best in life," Sania has been quoted as saying in The Economic Times.
Her father Imran Mirza confirmed that the engagement had been called off.
"This has nothing to do with her career. She has been playing through the engagement and I think she will continue to play. She has to fight out of it. It might hurt Sohrab, too, but he has to come out of it too," said Mirza.
Sania was formally engaged to Mohammad in Hyderabad in July 2009.
Sohrab and Sania have been friends for a long time and he is presently studying business management in the United Kingdom.
Sania who is in Melbourne for the Australian Open will go to Kuala Lumpur on Friday to lead India's challenge in the Fed Cup Asia Oceania Group 2 competition.
She has already crashed out of the Australian Open.
