Sania reaches 7th spot in doubles ranking

New Delhi: Sania Mirza's semifinal finish in the women's doubles event at the recently-concluded Australian Open has catapulted her to a career-best ranking of seventh position in the latest WTA Team Rankings, issued on Monday.

Sania jumped from 11th spot to be inside the top-10 in doubles rankings and if she manages to stay in the top 10 till June 21, 2012, she will get a direct entry into the London Olympics.

The Hyderabadi girl though slipped in the singles rankings to be placed at 111th spot from 106th position.

The top-64 players will get a direct entry into the singles draw of the Olympics and if Sania fails to get into that bracket, AITA will ask the organising committee for a wildcard entry.

Meanwhile Leander Paes, who won the Australian Open men's doubles with Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic and finished runners-up in mixed doubles event with Elena Vesnina, has retained his seventh spot in the ATP doubles rankings.

Rohan Bopanna also managed to retain his 11th position in the doubles' list but his new doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi lost eight positions to slip to 16th.

Bhupathi and Bopanna lost in the third round of the first grand slam of the year.

Somdev Devvarman, who pulled out of both Chennai Open and Australian Open beacuse of shoulder injury, lost four spots to be at 90th spot in the ATP singles' list.
