Mumbai: A court on Thursday allowed actor Sanjay Dutt, an accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, more time to surrender before it decides on his bail application.
Dutt, who has been found guilty of illegal arms possession, has appealed before the special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Preventive) Act (TADA) that it allow him benefit under the Probation of Offenders Act.
The court granted him more time to surrender until further orders. The court, which has absolved Dutt of criminal conspiracy in the case, heard arguments by the prosecution on Dutt's application.
As arguments were inconclusive, Dutt's lawyer was given time till February 20 to file a reply.
This is the sixth time that Dutt has been given reprieve since November when he was found guilty of possessing a 9mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle.
Dutt faces imprisonment ranging from five to 10 years for violating the Arms Act. An IANS report said Dutt had acquired an AK-56 allegedly from mobster Abu Salem's aide Ibrahim Mussa in January 1993 as he thought he needed self-protection.
He was arrested in April 1993, a month after the blasts rocked Mumbai, and spent nearly 16 months in jail.
