Mumbai: Ace cinematographer Santosh Sivan made his debut as a director 10 years ago with a children's film titled Halo.
Now after seven films under his belt, Sivan is ready with his first English feature titled Before the Rains.
Set in the 1930's in the director's birthplace Kerala, Before the Rains revolves around an Englishman, Henry Moores, who has plans to setup a spice plantation with help from his right hand man played by Rahul Bose.
The story takes a turn when Henry gets romantically involved with his housemaid – Sajani – played by Nandita Das.
“The story is a very human drama and sometimes people make wrong choices and it's also about people wanting to live in two worlds and having to make very hard choices,” Sivan said.
Speaking about the film, Santosh said that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working with a multi-cultural cast and crew.
“It was a very good feel to have so many different people from different parts of the world come together to make the film,” Sivan said.
Set for a debut at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival in September, Before the Rains will then travel to the Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea.
