New Delhi: The hunt for India's new hockey coach is almost over. Spain's Jose Manuel Brasa has emerged the frontrunner for the top job in Indian hockey.

Brasa is currently in India and has met officials of the ad-hoc committee running Indian hockey and has also given presentations to the Sports Ministry.

It is now upto him to decide on the job and if he agrees then he will take charge sometime in February.

Brasa is an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Master Coach and has completed FIH High Performance coaching course.

He had led the Spanish womens team to the Olympic gold at Barcelona Games in 1992.

"(It) Will be difficult for players, will be difficult for everybody. We have to work every day. We should travel less and work more at home and with scientific work we can approach the top teams in the world," Brasa told CNN-IBN about his plans.

India are without a full time coach after Joaquim Carvalho was sacked following the Olympic qualifying debacle in Chile.

After consultant Australian Ric Charlesworth's resignation in 2008, the ad-hoc committee had named MK Kaushik as the coach.

But the former international had to be released immediately after the Sports Ministry directed Kaushik to remain with the women’s national team.

At present Harender Singh is the coach-in-charge with Ramandeep Singh and Romeo James as his assistants.
