SC accepts Reliance plea on bidding

New Delhi: Just when you thought the privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airport was going ahead full steam, a new legal twist has been added to the tale.

Accepting Reliance Airport Developers' plea challenging the bidding process, the Supreme Court has decided to begin final hearings on the matter from June 1.

While hearing the Reliance plea, the Judges observed that the government's decision to lower the minimum qualifying marks for allowing financial bids needs to be examined.

Though this hearing is not expected to affect the takeover of the two airports by the two private airport developers GMR and GVK, it will certainly bring about an air of uncertainty to the whole process.

Reliance Airport Developers which lost the bid for Delhi airport , had challenged the bidding process in the Delhi High Court, where it lost the battle.

Reliance is questioning the government's decision to bring down the minimum qualifying marks for the financial bid from 80 to 50, which amounted to changing the bidding parameters.

Meanwhile, the plan to restructure the airports continues as per schedule and the work on the two airports has already been initiated.
