SC directs CBI to take over Ghaziabad PF scam

New Delhi: In a tough act against corruption in the higher judiciary, the Supreme Court has ordered a CBI probe into the Ghaziabad illegal Provident Fund withdrawal scam.

The Rupees 23 crore worth scam allegedly involves 34 judges including those from the High Court as well as the Supreme Court.

Last month, Justice BN Aggarwal who headed the three-judge bench hearing the scam had excused himself from hearing the case after advocate Shanti Bhushan alleged that the SC was protecting corrupt judges.

The SC judgment comes as a shot in the arm for the CBI who will carry out the orders.

It will take over from the UP police. The Uttar Pradesh state government told the court it was ready to hand over the investigations to the central agency.

The uncovering of the Rupees seven crore scam that involved a treasury officer siphoning money from the Employees Provident had alarmed many. It was alleged that the siphoned money was used for bribing sitting Judges of the highest courts of the country.

The Supreme Court has directed the CBI to file a status report in three months.
