New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday asked Congress MP from Assam, Mani Kumar Subba to prove his nationality within six weeks.
The court pulled up the Centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for shoddy investigation over the inqury into Subba's nationality.
The Court said it was annoyed with the affidavits of the CBI in which it was not mentioned whether Subba was a citizen of India or Nepal.
"Prima facie it is a serious allegation (on the citizenship issue). We have to take a serious view," a Bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan said.
Meanwhile, Congress Spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that there is no question of taking a party stand till the Supreme Court takes a decision.
The Congress MP from Tezpur, Assam, whose original name is said to be Mani Raj Limboo, is allegedly a resident of Nepal.
He was reportedly refused enrolment as an Indian voter in the 17 Central Pendam Assembly segment in Sikkim in 1985.
In December 1997, the CBI was asked to inquire into allegations that he is a foreign national. Subba was also embroiled in the multi-crore Nagaland State Lottery scam of 1999.
