CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday granted temporary relief to over one lakh Mumbai families, living in forest land near Borivili, Khandivili and Vikhroli.

The Supreme Court has now ordered that status quo be maintained till August 31.

Supreme Court asked the Maharashtra government to maintain status quo on the huge tract of land, about 9,193 acres situated within the municipal limits of Greater Mumbai, which had been declared as private forests.

A Bombay High Court order had earlier declared their buildings illegal and the constructions in violation of the Forest Conservation Act.

The Supreme Court has now ordered that status quo be maintained till August 31.
